Why go
Zhangjiajie is not one mountain but a sandstone forest: thousands of pillars, ravines and suspended walkways. The scenery is genuinely otherworldly. The point is not to tick off every viewpoint; it is to be outside at the hours when the light is good and the groups are still in the hotel.
Base yourself in Wulingyuan
Stay in Wulingyuan, not Zhangjiajie city. The national park gate is minutes away, and you can be inside before the day-trippers arrive. Choose a guesthouse that will store bags and arrange a driver; the park is large and the shuttle system takes time to learn.
Two-day route
Day one: Wulingyuan gate, Bailong Elevator early, Yuanjiajie and the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain. Day two: Yangjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, then walk down instead of taking the cable car. Start before 7am both days. The elevator queue after 9am can cost two hours.
What to skip
Skip the glass bridge if you are short on time; it is far from the park and the queue is long. Skip the “best viewpoint” tour that runs you between platforms. The side trails are quieter and often better. Bring cash for small vendors and a light rain shell; the weather changes fast.
