What actually works
Visa and Mastercard credit cards usually bind. Debit cards sometimes work, often at lower limits. Amex is patchy. UnionPay cards issued outside China tend to have the fewest problems. The 3% is charged by Alipay above 200 RMB; your bank may add its own fee on top.
Set it up in six steps
Download the international app, register with your home number, verify with your passport, add the card, test with a small payment, then set up WeChat Pay and cash as backup. Do not use a VPN to “fix” payments; it can trigger extra checks.

The 3,000–6,500 RMB limit
The cap is a risk setting, not a hard rule. Hotels and hospitals can usually split payments. High-speed rail tickets are below it. Luxury shopping is where it bites. Ask the merchant to split the bill; do not ask them to “try again” repeatedly.
If your card is declined
Nine times out of ten it is a bank fraud rule. Call the bank, try a different card, try a smaller amount, switch credit to debit, use WeChat Pay, fall back to cash and keep the receipt.
